September 11th has once again shown to the whole world the vital importance of self-development and human development as a primary goal. In this regard, the priority goal in businesses should now be to implement a market economy that serves, with priority, the development of people. Therefore, instead of acquiring economic property, they should employ their surplus resources to accelerate the self-development process of their work force. Our economic system is based on growth triggered by continuous increase in consumption. As we are wiser than the tools managing our economies, we, human-beings are gradually coming to realize that we are in fact the slaves of these economic systems and thus try to adopt now an attitude of consuming less. The world economy has lost its substance; borrowings and long-term high interest rates have pushed it into a structural weakness which in turn has rendered it vulnerable to small or large-scale shocks such as decrease in consumption. The money-flow from less developed countries to the rich ones and from poor people to the giant fortunes in the developed countries has revealed the fundamental elements of injustice inherent in the existing economic system. As a matter of fact, this state of affairs is like a time-bomb set for explosion and the more injustice is done, the sooner the explosion will take place.
One finds it hard to believe that the system will survive a long time with the assets transferred from the industrialized countries to the Third World in the form of loans. And, what if the Third World begins to claim the rights that it is entitled to on the earth? In fact, regardless of the location and circumstances of the new economic setting, economic issues will not be of priority in future societies. The essential goal in those societies will rather be to maximize the personal potentials of their individuals. Moreover, the main institutions of societies will not be constituted by the economic centers of power of today's societies. These will neither be trade unions nor banks and large corporations. These main institutions will rather be made up of knowledge centers of varying types. Thus, we will transform into learning societies as opposed to information societies as foreseen by some communities. However, this will not be a learning event to occur at a certain place and within a certain period of time. It will rather be a process and in fact it will be life itself with its different dimensions. In conclusion, we should all take our place within this new process and way of life to make sure we do not go through another September 11th.
