O gün, Ortaçağ zihniyetli modernlik karşıtı aşırı uçlar, 20.yüzyıl modernitesinin sembolik zirvelerinden birine, Dünya Ticaret Merkezi'nin New York kentindeki o kusursuz rasyonel kulelerine karşı dehşet verici bir saldırı düzenlediler. Bu saldırının örgütleyicisi Muhammed Atta'nın Almanya'da eğitilmiş profesyonel bir plancı ve gökdelenlerden nefret eden bir modernlik karşıtı olduğunu artık biliyoruz. Kuzey kulesine çarpan birinci uçağı kullanan bizzat kendisiydi. Dünya Ticaret Merkezi kulelerinin mimarı Minoru Yabasaki'nin bir "barış simgesi olarak düşündüğü şey başkaları için küresel emperyalizm olarak kabul edilen ezici gücün geleneksel mimariyi ve sosyal değerleri işgal ederek yok ettiği bir savaşın simgesiydi. El Kaide ile Taliban'ı yok edeceğimiz kesin. Ancak bundan daha önemlisi, bu türden insanların ortaya çıkmasını sağlayan çürütücü koşulları yok etmektir. Bunu yapabilmek için, ekonomisi ile, teknolojisi ile, sanatıyla gezegenimize dayattığımız bu modern dünyayı yeniden gözden geçirmemiz gerekiyor. Kendi modern kültürümüzün çürüyen temellerini gözden geçirip yeniden inşa etmemiz gerekiyor. Yaşadığımız bu terörizm krizi bizi, devraldığımız mirasın en önemli yönlerini-demokratik eşitliği, açık toplumu, hoşgörüyü, özgürlüğü ve kendi kaderini belirlemeyi-inceleyip onlar uğrunda savaşmaya zorluyor. Bu koşulları kendimiz için güvence altına alma uğruna savaşırken, bu şeyleri kendileri için de isteyen diğer insanlar için de güvence altına almayı istemeliyiz. Bu nükleer ve biyolojik terör çağında başka seçeneğimiz yok. Bugünlerde yaşadığımız bu terör krizinin tarihte, bilim ve teknolojinin geleneksel kültürün ve doğal dünyanın zenginliklerine daha çok destek olmayı öğrenmelerini sağlayacak yeni bir çağın açılışına sebep olmasını ümit edebiliriz. O zaman, dünyanın dört bir yanındaki geleneksel kültürler de, bizim yeni bir hoşgörü ve birlikte varolma, varlığımıza yönelik ortak tehditlere karşı işbirliği ve herkesin yararına insani bir ilerleme çağı için yaptığımız çağrıya daha büyük bir istekle katılabilirler. Ancak bu türden bir modern dünya modernizmi aşabilir. Bu bağlamda, 2004 yılının dünyamıza barış dolu günler getirmesini dilerim. September 11th, 2001 will be recorded in history books as the date that ended the "modern" world. This date marks the day when anti-modernity extremists with medieval mentalities organized a dreadful attack against the immaculate rational towers of the World Trade Center in New York, which was one of the symbolic summits of 20th century modernity. We now know that Muhammad Atta; the organizer of the attack was a professional planner trained in Germany and an anti-modernity figure who hated skyscrapers. It was he himself who actually flew the first plane that hit the North Tower. What Minoru Yabasaki; the architect of the World Trade Center thought of as a symbol of peace represented for others a war where the smashing power of global imperialism occupied and destroyed traditional architecture and social values. It is certain that we will wipe out Al-Qaida and Taliban. However, what is more important is to disintegrate the corroding circumstances that lead to the emergence of such kind of people. In order to achieve this, we must rethink the economy, technology and art that make up this modern world that we have placed upon our planet. We need to revise the decaying foundations of our own contemporary culture and rebuild it. The terrorism crisis that we go through forces us to examine and fight for the most important aspects of our legacy, namely democratic equality, open society, tolerance, freedom and self-determination. While fighting to secure these conditions for our own selves, we should be willing to secure them for others as well who also want to have them. We do not have another choice in this era of nuclear and biological terrorism. We can hope that today's terrorism crisis leads to a new era in history that would pave the way to learning to support science and technology, traditional culture and natural richness. Then, traditional cultures all around the world can join our call for a new tolerance and co-existence, for cooperation regarding common threats against our existence and for an age of human progress in favor of all. Only such a modern world can go beyond modernism. I would like to take this opportunity to wish days full of peace to our world in 2004.
