IN THE NEW WORLD ORDER, POLITICIANS SHOULD HAVE THE COURAGE TO INCLUDE ECOLOGICAL STRUCTURING WITHIN LEGAL AND FINANCIAL FRAMEWORKS

Wolfgang Sachs who is a member of the staff of Reinhard Loske and Manfred Linz Wuppertal Climate and Environment and Energy Institute forms the dimensions and principles of sustainable development again in his conversation published in NPQ magazine. I shall try to assess below Sach’s this new formation and the consequences occur together with you.

For the last 5-10 years, more changes have materialized than all previous decades and shall carry on doing so. Fall of Berlin Wall, Rise of Asia’s economy, Intense competition in Europe, globalisation and emerging of neo-nationalism and racism, violence and restarting of the wars are the main proofs of our argument.

Developed countries have to make important choices in the coming years. How to prevent communities to be divided as developed and undeveloped and rich and poor? How the social security systems to be designed in communities where human life expectancy improves? What can be done to achieve a healthy economy that everybody can benefit? What shall be the role of the state in the life of society? How shall the business world be restructured? What kind of political changes and institutional adaptations shall be implemented? All those questions have to be answered. However, those answers can be reliable only by materializing ecologic and global justice requirements. Progress and prosperity exist today is misleading; price of this progress has been to jeopardize ecologic balance, global justice and future generations; ecological resources have been exhausted.

Sustainable development is to follow a path that meets today’s needs and also does not put future generations’ needs in danger. This principle at the same time puts forward the argument that environmental problems can not be considered seperately from economic and social problems. Old principles that aim economic progress first then repair social and ecologic damage are not valid any more. Now, a new approach where ecologic, social and economic benefits are considered together is needed.

Companies in future can make money by producing or servicing products directed towards preventing resources instead of consuming increasing amount of raw materials and marketing products. Although technicians and engineers achieve higher social status by producing many kilowatt hours, tons of raw materials and barrels of petrol; they will not lose anything from their status if they preserve natural sources instead of changing human genes; make research on usage of sun energy instead of splitting atoms. Consumers, when they buy a product, might be more conscious by noticing if any ecologic sensitivity has been implemented in production, processing and utilization of that product. Anybody with legal struggle to prevent damage to humans and nature and bring happiness is appreciated by the community.

Today’s human being is increasinly worried more about this trend and wants to find the right balance. People are ready to exchange their earnings with their free will; time they can utilize for their own needs to their work hours. However, in order to materialize this in a big scale, state, business world and everybody involved in collective negotiations should create real preferences, provide guaranteed earnings for semi time works, not allow people work without leave for years, enable small scale companies to be set up. If those objectives are followed with great determination then an environment where different interests comply with each other can be obtained; employers might approach to their interests with more flexibility and serve to social and ecologic stability by avoiding pressures of progress. Therefore, now is the time to answer the last and most important question before it is too late. Are we ready to have our position as being active and conscious people to make such an exciting step forward and start the struggle?
